Control instead of constraints: Yettel renews its prepaid offering

Nearly a quarter of mobile subscribers use prepaid plans*, meaning they pay for their mobile usage in advance and “live within their means” when it comes to mobile spending. Even within prepaid offerings, however, there can be more and less advantageous options. What are today’s prepaid usage habits, and how are mobile operators adapting to these needs? Yettel has the answers.

Although the postpaid market (i.e. subscriptions paid after usage) continues to grow and many customers prefer paying afterwards, there remains a significant group for whom prepaid plans (where usage is paid for in advance) are the ideal solution. As customer needs evolve and postpaid offerings change accordingly, prepaid plans have also transformed and now represent something quite different from what they used to.

For prepaid customers, one of the most important factors is a transparent cost structure. In practice, this means that in addition to classic regular top-ups, extra data and voice add-ons can be purchased separately. As a result, the offering can be flexibly tailored – from the smallest units all the way to unlimited options – giving customers full freedom to choose the solutions that best match their needs.

Time is no longer a factor – simplification helps customers make better decisions

Flexibility is further increased by the fact that the previous time limits on starter packages have now been removed at Yettel: purchased data or voice allowances can now be used freely until they are fully consumed.

Instead of the earlier, more complex system, every top-up amount is now valid for a uniform period of 365 days. This means that with each top-up, customers can extend the validity of their SIM card by a full year, providing significantly greater flexibility than before, even for those who use mobile services less frequently.

For prepaid users who make voice calls and also use mobile data, the new offering covers a very wide range of options: they can freely choose from the smallest 1-day, 1 GB option all the way up to a 30-day unlimited data plan.

Do it in the app – you’ll be better off!

For prepaid customers, using the Yettel app now comes with additional benefits: every balance top-up made through the official Yettel app is rewarded with a 1-day unlimited internet pass as a gift. By purchasing an add-on voice package, the per-minute call rate can be reduced to as low as HUF 12 for any domestic destination – including calls outside the network to subscribers of other mobile operators.

Who are prepaid plans for?

Prepaid options are often chosen by consumers with a conscious, cost-control-oriented mindset. Those who choose this model make decisions similar to opting for a car sharing instead of owning a car, or buying occasional public transport tickets instead of a monthly pass: they only want to pay for actual usage, because they consider it more predictable.

This mindset is reflected across different user needs as well:

  • For occasional users: There is no need to rush to use up their balance. Thanks to the 365-day validity period and data allowances that do not expire before being fully used, their number remains active even during less active periods.
  • For parents and children: This is an ideal solution for a first phone. Parents can purchase exactly the amount of allowance they consider appropriate, while children learn digital awareness and how to manage their data usage within set limits.
  • For those avoiding commitments: For users who would not give up their contract-free status even in exchange for handset discounts, this system provides the desired freedom.

Yettel’s renewed prepaid tariffs reflect the idea that mobile usage is rarely constant, so the service should flexibly adapt to individual needs – not the other way around. With the new portfolio, real control and freedom of choice are firmly placed in customers’ hands.

*Based on the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) report for the second half of 2025, prepaid subscriptions account for 23% of SIM cards used for voice traffic.
