5G technology supports MSc and BSc students at Óbuda University

Óbudai University has signed a partnership agreement with Yettel Hungary for the deployment of a 5G mobile communications network. The technology directly supporting students and researchers and the related training mark a milestone in enhancing the education provided by the university. Under the strategic partnership, the mobile operator and the university collaborate not only in education but also in recruitment.

As part of the strategic agreement, Yettel has set up a 5G mobile communication network on the campus of Óbuda University in Bécsi út, and has provided the university with SIM cards and terminal equipment free of charge for testing purposes.

The technical construction of the 5G network took place in autumn 2022, and the 5G base station deployed by the mobile operator on campus at the end of the year is now serving students and researchers at full capacity. In addition to providing network coverage on the campus, dedicated equipment has been supplied to the IT and cybersecurity labs to enable students to conduct 5G-related research indoors smoothly. This development may contribute to the continued progress of the Hungarian mobile communications industry, as well as to the exploration and implementation of new 5G applications in Hungary.

One of the key elements of strategic partnerhsip is collaboration in education – Yettel is currently involved in the development of the curriculum of a new telecommunications-related subject at the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Artificial Intelligence of John von Neumann Faculty of Informatics. The subject 'Introduction to 5G technology' was launched in the academic year 2022/2023 and it has already been taken by around eighty students.

The curriculum covers the telecommunications industry, the specificities of the domestic market, spectrum use and management, energy efficiency investments, future use cases of 5G, IoT technology and private networks. The new subject provides students with specific theoretical and practical hands-on knowledge through real-life application examples and hands-on experience.

The partnership aims to provide Hungary’s continuously growing mobile communication industry with highly qualified employees who are able and willing to learn about new mobile technologies or adapt mobile technology-based use cases to the Hungarian environment. As part of the strategic agreement, the university and Yettel will also work together in developing a recruitment and internship program.

“Developing industrial relations has always been a priority for Óbuda University to help students deepen not only their theoretical knowledge but also their practical skills during their studies”, said Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács, Rector of Óbudai University. “The job opportunities for graduates at Óbuda University are excellent thanks to the institution’s practice-oriented training. The new partnership agreement reinforces this approach,” he added.

“Based on our experience to date, students seem to be highly interested in the potentials of mobile technology. We hope that thanks to this agreement and the deployment of a 5G mobile network we can contribute to the university’s development program aiming to explore the potentials of 5G and recognize the practical features and benefits of the new technology. We are confident that this will also contribute to the university’s professional growth and accelerate development”, said Zoltán Dávid, Yettel’s Chief Strategy Officer.
