Toss a Gig – Yettel launches free data sharing service

Yettel has launched a free service unique in the Hungarian telecommunications  sector. With the ‘Toss a Gig’ feature available in the company’s official app, its postpaid customers can gift 1 GB of mobile data to any Yettel customer with a top-up card once a month.

More and more people rely on mobile internet not only on the move, but also at home or at work. Social media, streaming services, video calls and online games all generate significant data traffic which can make an extra 1 GB of data particularly valuable. The Toss a Gig feature, however, goes beyond simple data sharing. It also strengthens digital community building and contributes to a sense of social solidarity. This can be particularly important in situations when a friend or family member urgently needs mobile internet, for example for navigation, running errands, or staying in touch.

Based on Yettel’s network performance measurements, mobile internet traffic is growing by an average of 30% per year. This is due to the increasing number and affordability of unlimited tariff plans, the growing versatility of smartphones, and the fact that Yettel’s 5G network also offers a home internet service, which can substitute for fixed-line internet.

Some customers, however, do not have unlimited internet. While these plans are offering more and more data, a month’s allowance may still not be enough. This is where the Toss a Gig feature can help.

How does it work?

This feature is extremely simple to use. With version 11.9.0 or later of the Yettel app, the update is available on the main screen or under the menu item Services > Gifting. From there, you can choose who you want to send data to with just a few clicks, and the gifted gigabyte will be immediately added to the selected prepaid Yettel subscriber’s data allowance – with no extra cost, permission, or setup required.

Yettel is committed to technological innovation and continuous improvement of the customer experience, and it invests significant resources in network modernization. Over the past period, it has almost completely reconstructed its network infrastructure and has already launched its high-speed, high-frequency 5G service at its 1000th base station. However, the developments do not stop there. Together with its strategic partner CETIN Hungary, Yettel plans to invest tens of billions of HUF in further expanding the Hungarian network infrastructure by 2028.
