Hungarian mobile networks in the global top 10

Based on the results of OpenSignal’s latest report, Hungary has the third fastest 4G networks in the world and Hungary ranks in the global top 10 also in terms of network coverage. In 2016 and 2017, Telenor Hungary has spent more than HUF 12bn on network development taking broadband internet not only to large cities but also to 2,700 towns and villages with a population of less than 6,000.

Based on the results of OpenSignal’s latest survey on 4G services published on 7 June under the title The State of LTE, Hungary’s mobile networks have improved both in terms of download speed and the availability of 4G services since last year.

User tests completed using the independent organization’s free app shows that Hungarian 4G users access the internet at a download speed of 42.61 Mbps on average which is 2 Mbps higher than in November last year. Hungary’s 4G mobile internet is just slightly slower than that of Singapore (45.62 Mbps) and South Korea (43.46 Mbps).

The availability of 4G services has also significantly increased in Hungary. Last November, Hungary ranked 12th on the global list for network coverage with 79.77%, this time it came 9th with 85.59%.

Of neighbouring countries, Croatia is the only one included in the top 10 in terms of 4G download speed, while none of Hungary’s neighbours rank in the top 10 for network coverage. OpenSignal experts praised the capabilities of 4G mobile networks in Hungary, Holland, Norway, Singapore and South Korea all combining fast download speeds with outstanding network coverage.

“In Hungary, Telenor’s 4G services are now available to more than 98% of the population. We have been engaged in intensive network development over the past two years at a total value of HUF 12bn. As a result, we have 4G+ (LTE Advanced) technology offering a download speed of up to 300 Mbps available at 700 base stations. Our total indoor coverage reached 84.9% last year which means that mobile services are now available in rooms several walls away from the street. Telenor Hungary and our Norwegian parent company are now performing the field tests for the 5G network, a remarkable achievement also on a global scale”, said  György Koller, Chief Technical Officer of Telenor Hungary.
