According to the Hungarian Statistical Office (KSH), more than 60% of Hungarians have shopped online in the last 3 months, and it is clear that an increasing proportion of purchases are now being made on mobile phones. Apps that offer a convenient and flexible way to shop, order food and run daily errands are playing a major role. One such app is Wolt, which allows users to purchase a growing range of non-food products in addition to those listed above. Yettel is the first Hungarian mobile operator to join the list of Wolt partners: more than thirty items are currently available through the Wolt app, making everyday mobile use easier. The offer includes prepaid SIM cards, prepaid mobile phones, and frequently used, popular accessories such as charging cables and adapters, earphones, selfie sticks or a screen cleaner.
The cooperation launched in pilot mode is a first for the Hungarian mobile market. Initially, the service will cover three locations: Yettel shops in the Allee and Árkád shopping malls in Budapest and the Fórum Yettel shop in Debrecen will be available on the Wolt app. When users within a 10km radius of these locations open the Wolt app, they will see the Yettel shops where they can place their orders. The products will then arrive at the delivery address within an hour, just like when ordering food.
Yettel and Wolt started their cooperation in the summer of 2024 with the Yepp digital tariff, a service that can be ordered through the Yettel app and is also available with an eSIM, but for those who need a physical SIM card, Wolt couriers in Budapest, Debrecen, Győr, Pécs and Szeged deliver the card to their doorstep within an hour.
Cheeseburgers, bananas, Christmas trees – that’s what Hungarians order on Wolt
Most people know Wolt for hot food ordering – not surprisingly, as hot food is one of the most popular ordering categories, with over 750,000 cheeseburgers ordered through the app last year. Other popular products include groceries – more than a million bananas were purchased on Wolt in 2024 – and health and beauty products (e.g. Covid test kit, nasal spray, pregnancy test, bath bombs, lotions). Last year, more than 20,000 orders were placed by Wolt customers for flower bouquets, but Christmas tree deliveries are also quite common. Many people use the app to manage their pet-related purchases: in 2024, for example, three and a half tonnes of cat litter were sold at Wolt.
On average, Wolt couriers deliver an order 1.9 kilometres away. Every little bit adds up: in 2024, the bike couriers covered a total of 15 million kilometres – the equivalent of going around the world 374 times. Fridays and Sundays are the most popular days for ordering. These days see more orders for alcohol and general groceries, with the last day of the week seeing the highest grocery sales.
