Mobile Calls After the Swim: Call Traffic Doubles at Balaton Crossing

Messages from supporters reached the middle of Lake Balaton

Over ten thousand people took part in the 43rd LIDL Balaton Crossing. According to Yettel’s data, there was a significant increase in call, SMS and data traffic on the day of the swim, both at the start in Révfülöp and the finish in Balatonboglár, compared to the previous Saturday. At the start, 70% more calls were made, with conversations lasting 2.5 times longer on the Yettel network than on an average day.

The swim started from Révfülöp, where call traffic among Yettel subscribers rose by 70%, and they sent more than twice as many text messages as a week earlier, on 2 August. Swimmers and their supporters made even more calls and sent even more text messages at the finish in Balatonboglár, where total call duration was two and a half times higher, and the number of text messages increased by a factor of 2.6. Data traffic also increased at both sites: by 10 percent in in Révfülöp  and by 16 percent in Balatonboglár compared to a week earlier.

To meet the growing demand for traffic, Yettel is continuously upgrading its network around Lake Balaton. The company boosted its mobile network capacity for the 43rd LIDL Balaton Crossing to ensure that all participants could easily get in touch with their loved ones. As a key partner of the event, the mobile operator once again offered a variety of activities on the day of the crossing. Before the start and after completing the course, swimmers and SUP paddlers could use Yettel’s 5G Mobile Point to immediately call their friends, quickly find each other or share their results. Nearly a thousand people took advantage of this opportunity. Supporters could send messages from the Yettel ‘Cheer Zone’ or online from anywhere, and thanks to the fast network, these messages reached the middle of the lake, enabling everyone to cheer on their loved ones exactly where it was needed most. More than 1,200 messages of support were received, which, according to the participants, provided huge motivation and an extra boost at the halfway point.

The results also show that, of the towns surveyed [1], those on the southern shore – such as Siófok, Fonyód, and Balatonlelle – generally spent more time on calls using the Yettel network than towns on the northern shore. Customers can access super-fast 5G services on Yettel’s continuously expanding network at numerous resorts around Lake Balaton.
