How can we be responsible for our future: innovation and sustainable growth on the same platform

Yettel publishes its sustainability report

How can a mobile network contribute to reducing social inequalities, and what does responsible technological operation mean from a sustainability perspective? Yettel Hungary’s latest sustainability report has been published, showcasing a 10-percentage-point increase in 5G network coverage, the collection and recycling of nearly twenty thousand pieces of electronic waste, and support for over 16,000 children in using the internet more responsibly.

Alongside fundamental economic considerations, Yettel also takes environmental and social aspects into account in its operations. These aspects are summarised in the company’s sustainability strategy. In line with the guidelines of its parent company, the e& PPF Telecom Group, the strategy is tailored to Hungary-specific conditions and expectations, the company’s market position, and existing practices. Although reporting is not yet mandatory in the current regulatory environment, Yettel has voluntarily decided to begin the transition to the new standard and has prepared and published its latest report accordingly. The 2024 sustainability report focuses on making the digital network accessible to all, promoting innovation and sustainable growth through products and services, reducing the environmental footprint, and making commitments regarding employees and ensuring ethical and transparent operations.

Using mobile technology and digitalisation to create a more sustainable future

A reliable mobile network that is accessible to everyone can help reduce social inequalities and contribute to sustainability. Yettel’s mobile network is one of the fastest in the country. Its 4G network coverage stands at 99%, and its 5G coverage has increased by more than 10 percentage points compared to 2023, reaching 49.5%. By the end of 2024, 1,028 base stations were providing 5G coverage, enabling faster and more secure data transmission, as well as more energy-efficient operation.

Yettel’s long-term objectives include continuously improving the customer experience, expanding digital services and operating responsibly with data security in mind. As part of this, alongside advanced mobile network services, Yettel provides digital solutions that simplify and streamline everyday connectivity for customers. In line with this, Yettel has established an Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics Department to provide advanced analytical support for business processes and customer relations.

A sustainable future also includes digital education through the use of mobile technology. In 2024, 16,259 children participated in Yettel’s programmes promoting responsible internet use, exceeding the annual target of 15,000.

Environment, employee community and ethical operation

As an important element of reducing its environmental footprint, Yettel aims to minimise the environmental impact of its operations, with particular focus on managing electronic waste and recycling secondary raw materials. Between 2023 and 2024, the company collected and sent more than 10 tonnes (10,199 kg) of electronic waste for proper recycling, including 18,637 used handsets (2,776 kg) last year.

Another key pillar of the sustainability strategy is putting employees at the heart of corporate operations. This involved safeguarding employees’ health, safety, and well-being, accelerating the integration of disabled employees, and fostering an inclusive workplace. In 2024, Yettel was recognised as one of the best employers in Hungary by Top Employers Institute, an independent international organisation that examines corporate HR practices. The company’s efforts in this area have also been recognised with numerous awards. For example, it was listed as one of the most attractive employers in the industry in the PwC Workforce Preference Survey, which surveyed over 90,000 people. It was also voted the second-best employer in Hungary in the Munkahelyeink.hu survey by current and former employees, and received recognition in the HBLF Diverse and Fair Workplace Awards and the Three Princes, Three Princesses Foundation’s Family-Friendly Company of the Year competition.

Ethical and transparent operations include responsible and sustainable procurement. To support this, Yettel has introduced a new supplier collaboration plan. To strengthen employees’ sustainability awareness, the company organised an ESG e-learning course which was completed by more than two-thirds of colleagues. The company has also begun developing additional training programmes on related topics, ranging from health protection to cybersecurity, data privacy and accessibility.
