Applications are accepted for Hégető Award 2024

A new category is added this year

In 2024, an award program will once again be launched for editorial offices and journalists who highlight social issues of public importance. Established in 2003, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the award, and once again applications are invited for videos, photos or photo series that present social issues and possible solutions. This year, the jury will also select a winner in a new category: the Best First-Time Entry Award will go to a creator who has not previously applied for the Hégető Award.

In recent years, we have faced a number of challenges that have had a serious impact on society as a whole. In 2020 and 2021, the lives of millions were dominated by the coronavirus pandemic and its aftermath, in 2022 by the war in neighbouring Ukraine and then in 2023 by the war in Israel. The plight of the vulnerable, serious environmental problems, inflation, the state of healthcare, education and child protection are also major issues in the national and international public discourse.

In 2024, the award program is open to works (videos, single photos, or photo series – up to 10 images) published online or broadcast on television between 1 September 2023 and 31 August 2024.

Deadline for submitting applications: 31 August 2024

This year’s jury is chaired by Ildikó Enyedi, Balázs Béla Award-winning film director, screenwriter and artist of merit. Other members of the jury include Antónia Mészáros, Executive Director of UNICEF Hungary, and Balázs Weyer, journalist. The photos will be evaluated by Éva Keleti, Kossuth and Balázs Béla Award-winning photographer.

Yettel is a long-time sponsor of the Hégető Honorka Foundation and the Hégető Honorka Award Program. This year it is again offering a special prize for a selected project. In addition to honouring the creator of the winning video, the mobile operator also supports the cause that the entry had brought to light, raising awareness of the irreplaceable work of journalists.

The Hégető Award was established in 2003 in memory of the life’s work of Honorka Hégető, a reporter for RTL who died young in a car accident. Honorka produced reports on the lives of disadvantaged people, for which she was awarded the Tolerance Award in 1999.
