Telecom customers regularly face tricky fraud attempts causing them inconvenience or a financial loss of a varying degree. The most common types of fraud affecting Hungarian mobile users are as follows:
Fraud type #1: Many customers use online customer service MyTelenor instead of our call center to pay their bills and activate services. No matter how unlikely it may seem (“Are they going to pay my bill, or what?), even online customer service access can be abused. It happened, for example, that a fraudster purchased high-end smartphones on instalments in someone else’s name with delivery to an address given by them while leaving instalment payment to their victims.
Solution: Never disclose your MyTelenor login details to anyone.
Fraud type #2: Fraudsters wishing to obtain confidential data often refer to the statutory requirement to identify prepaid customers based on a legal regulation effective since 2017. Such data are usually used to purchase high-end smartphones on instalments.
Solution: Use the official data reconciliation option available on our website, in any Telenor shop or at call center number 1220.
Fraud type #3: Another common type of fraud is when fraudsters call a customer from a hidden number and introduce themselves as Telenor’s representative. They say that the customer won a prize game but they need to top up an amount to a specific prepaid account to cover the technical costs of getting their prize.
Solution: You should never top up any prepaid account. Please report such attempts through any of the above channels because calls initiated from hidden numbers can also be identified in Telenor’s systems.
Fraud type #4: In some cases, fraudsters offer customers a more attractive tariff if they fax a copy of their phone bills to them. They do so to get hold of their personal data (name, address, customer no.) and then use these data to purchase a smartphone in their name requesting delivery to their own address.
Solution: Never transfer your bills or their copies to anyone.
Fraud type #5: Early this year, many Hungarian mobile users had unanswered calls from exotic countries. These fraudsters want victims to return their call generating international traffic. In this case, fraudsters get a share of the traffic revenue generated.
Solution: Never return a call from a foreign country. As simple as that.
Fraud type #6: Data phishers send fake bills or payment notices for missed payment or default interest to customers through e-mail. They expect the recipient to automatically pay the amount.
Solution: Always check the sender of payment notices. Telenor sends invoice letters or payment notices either from e-mail address eszamla@telenor.hu or phone number +36 20 202 0043. If you find the sender suspicious, don’t click on any link but type in www.telenor.hu manually to visit Telenor’s website.
The above are the most common types of fraud encountered by Telenor’s customer service. As fraudsters continuously experiment with new methods, if you have any suspicion, please visit Telenor’s anti-fraud site at https://www.telenor.hu/aktualis-visszelesek_kezelese.
The most important thing to remember is that Telenor staff never ask for customers’ login details or password either through e-mail, in SMS or on the phone. If you face such a request, you have probably been contacted by a fraudster. Please report such fraud attempts on Telenor’s website, its Facebook page, at call center numbers 1220 and +36 (20) 2000-000, or in any Telenor shop.
