Plan carefully for a meaningful winter break
“A meaningful and relaxing winter break depends on planning ahead,” says Balázs Koren. At the beginning of the break, it’s a good idea to draw up a plan that includes both joint and individual activities. The children should feel that these programmes are about them and that you as parents are really involved. It’s important to make these activities versatile, whether it’s winter sports, visiting museums, doing arts and crafts or even watching a film together. As well as being fun, they are an opportunity for the whole family to strengthen relationships and share new experiences.
Use the digital world in a smart way
Digital tools should not be fully rejected either. “Setting some common rules makes more sense than banning screen time altogether,” suggests Balázs Koren. Digital devices can be used for learning, playing together or even for creative projects such as making a short film. The expert also says it’s important for parents to understand what their children are doing online. It’s worth spending some time together and asking them to show you the games they use every day. This not only strengthens the bond, but also helps parents understand and find out what their children are interested in.
Practical solutions for everyday life
If parents cannot be present all the time, it’s worth getting together with other families and organising a ‘parent exchange’. This way, children can be in the company of friends while adults share the burden of parenting. Other options include playing board games, DIY projects or even cooking together, which can be both a fun and educational activity.
Balance and quality time
The key message of the winter break is to make children feel that they are important to you and that you love being with them. "Shared experiences are crucial in the long run, so take the time to organise quality programmes,” concludes Balázs Koren. Whether it’s outdoor activities or quiet time at home, the key is balance and mindful presence.

Santatracker.google.com: a real Christmas gem from Google, updated every year. Originally conceived as a way to follow Santa Claus on a map, there are now lots of games and imaginative activities for users to enjoy.
Math Duel 2: a great two-player game where you can test your basic maths skills against each other. The game is great fun for young and old alike, and can even be a great game to play at a New Year’s Eve house party.
