The size and functionality of mobile phones have changed out of recognition since the early days of mobile technology. First, vendors tried to keep size to the minimum, but with internet use getting mainstream, development efforts became more focused on large displays/battery capacity and top performance. In the meantime, the functionality and size of SIM cards required to access the mobile network haven’t changed much. SIM cards now occupy a disproportionately large space in handsets, while vendors are trying to add more useful components to their models to maximize performance. As a result, providing all physical SIM card functions in an integrated chip whose functionality goes beyond that of traditional SIM cards would be major progress. This is what eSIM (or embedded SIM) provides.
eSIM is a software-based solution enabling smart devices to connect to the mobile network. In terms of functionality, they surpass traditional SIM cards. The features of eSIM can be remotely enabled and one eSIM can manage up to 10 subscriptions. All you need to enable an eSIM is internet access on your device. Customers can enable their eSIM using the QR code printed by Telenor. This way, the digital product can be put in use immediately upon purchase.
Since the card is virtual, it cannot be removed from the device if it is stolen. Therefore, the geographical location of lost or stolen devices can be fairly accurately identified. The eSIM can also be used to add direct mobile internet access to devices without a SIM slot – including most smart watches and accessories capable of accessing the mobile network. eSIM undermines the position of physical SIM cards also because it can prevent inconveniences caused by cards coming out of place or getting damaged.
eSIM is also an environmentally-friendly alternative. Its broad adoption will significantly reduce plastic consumption and the volume of electronic waste generated. Telenor has already taken steps to implement environmentally friendly SIM solutions. In June 2021, it launched half-size physical SIM cards cutting the amount of plastic needed for the manufacturing and packaging of cards to half. Smaller SIMs have more favourable manufacturing, transportation, warehousing and recycling parameters than their larger-size predecessors. In terms of environmental impact, however, eSIM provides the best long-term solution.
The eSIM service is currently available to Telenor’s new and existing SME and large enterprise customers, with or without handset purchase. It will be launched for consumers and small business customers in the first half of next year.
