Survey: people consider data security important, yet they don’t do enough to protect themselves

Yettel conducts large-scale, nationwide survey among its customers

You need to protect not only your computer, but also your mobile phone against data theft, hackers or unwanted content. A recent survey has shown that while the majority of respondents consider data security important, a much smaller ratio use any kind of data protection solution. Yettel has launched a new internet security service following this year’s 10th European Cybersecurity Month.

The European Cybersecurity Month, a campaign to raise awareness of cyber threats and cybersecurity awareness, has been taking place across Europe since 2012. Concluding a one month campaign in October, Yettel analysed its large-sample customer research results, and has now launched a new internet security service, Yettel NetPajzs.

Research results

The nationwide survey conducted on a large sample of Yettel customers revealed that the security of personal data is a priority for 61% of respondents. 40% of those surveyed feel aware of online threats, the rest are unsure. The majority (38%) or a close friend or relative (30%) have already experienced an online security issue, such as a virus, data theft or their child encountering age-inappropriate content online.
The vast majority of users believe that smartphones should be protected with security software like those used on computers, with 68% of respondents agreeing or strongly agreeing. Nevertheless, while two out of three  respondents use security software on a laptop or PC, only 43% use it on a smartphone. Although young people are the most aware of the threats of using the internet, they would still use a lower level of protection on their smartphones.

They are also the target group of Yettel NetPajzs, a mobile internet security service available from 22 November that filters internet traffic over Yettel’s mobile network, blocking unwanted content before it reaches your phone. It doesn’t require a separate application, it starts automatically after the service is activated, and the user can then individually set the desired security level and content types to be blacklisted. This makes smartphone-based internet use more secure, as long as the user uses Yettel’s mobile network and is not connected to another operator’s WiFi network.

Yettel NetPajzs identifies and blocks suspicious websites that are likely to contain malware, spyware or are suspected to be phishing sites. The service can also block various types of unwanted content, such as gambling, adult content or even social media websites. As the service can be ordered for any Yettel SIM card – even for children – it can also be used to make it safer for minors to use their smartphones. Yettel’s research also covered this topic and the results showed a high level of unanimity among respondents: 47% fully agree and 42% agree that parents should be able to monitor and, if necessary, restrict what their children can see online.

“Yettel is committed to providing the best mobile data and related services to its customers. The research clearly shows that today it’s no longer enough to simply provide enough data. The majority of our customers are aware of the need to use some form of internet security solution, although few are actually making an effort to be protected. This is where we want to help our customers. Activating NetPajzs protection is extremely easy. The solution is available on all our sales channels and provides customers with a worry-free, up-to-date protection for the price of a cup of coffee for a whole month,” said Máté Pomezanski, Director of Digital Products at Yettel Hungary.

Yettel NetPajzs has been available to consumers and SMB customers without commitment and with a 30-day free trial for a monthly fee of HUF 390 since 22 November.
