Hungary’s fastest mobile network announced

Results confirmed by NMHH measurements

Yettel has the fastest 4G and 5G mobile internet networks in Hungary, according to network measurement results published by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) on the szelessav.net website on 11 March 2025, based on aggregate national average download and upload speeds. Having spent almost HUF 100 billion on modernising its mobile network between 2020 and 2024, the telco company will launch high-speed 5G service at its 1,000th base station in a few days’ time, and has earmarked another tens of billions of HUF for further development in Hungary by 2028.

Full modernization to get the fastest mobile internet

The mobile internet network measurement data published by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority on szelessav.net on 11 March 2025 confirmed that Yettel Hungary offers its customers the fastest 4G and 5G mobile internet based on aggregate national average speeds. According to the information available on the website, the authority’s measurement trucks travel around the country and then subject the recorded measurements to rigorous checks. Based on the continuously growing and verified national aggregated measurement results[1], Yettel’s mobile network is the fastest in Hungary with an average download speed of 148 Mbps on 5G devices and 75 Mbps on 4G devices. The 4G outdoor coverage provided by Yettel to Hungary’s population[2] exceeds 99% at a national level, while the 5G network coverage, which is being continuously developed and rolled out in dynamic urban environments and busy tourist areas, has already reached 52%.

New mobile internet results confirmed by other sources

Based on more than 600,000 measurements collected in the Speedtest app by independent international organisation Ookla[3], Yettel’s mobile network was the fastest in Hungary in the second half of 2024. The Speedtest Award for the fastest mobile network is granted using the Speed Score™ which ranks networks based each operator’s download and upload speeds. The tests used to calculate the Speed Score are carried out using only state-of-the-art handsets capable of connecting to the fastest, most widely available technology on the market. In the period under review, Yettel had a Speed Score™ of 137.26, while Magyar Telekom and One Hungary had scores of 60.51 and 40.4, respectively.

“Our future-proof mobile network and the services built on it, developed from a multi-billion HUF investment budget, will give Yettel capabilities that will take our future role far beyond that of a mobile operator. Based on this strong infrastructure foundation, our goal is to become a ‘telcotech’ company that provides ground-breaking solutions for the everyday needs of consumers and business customers in the age of digitization and AI. It is a great honour that the Hungarian telecommunications regulator, NMHH, has rated our mobile network as the fastest in Hungary, based on national aggregate average speed measurement data published on the website szelessav.net, and we have also been selected as the fastest according to the measurement methodology of Ookla Speedtest, the best-known international speed measurement company. The results are due to a significant financial investment and the hard work of dedicated professionals. I'm proud of the Yettel team and their commitment to working together every day to achieve mutual success and maximise the Yettel customer experience,” said Igor Prerovsky, CEO of Yettel Hungary.

At Yettel, 5G access is available to all customers at no extra charge or tariff plan, meaning that any customer with a 5G-enabled handset and an active data plan[4] with no speed limit can benefit from the 5G mobile network in a 5G coverage area. More than 25% of the operator’s total network traffic is already carried using 5G technology, and 86% of handsets sold to consumers in 2024 were already 5G-enabled.

“Our customers are already seeing the benefits of the resources we have invested in modernizing our network. We have rebuilt our network almost to the last bolt, and in a few days, we will launch our high-frequency, high-speed 5G service at the 1000th base station, thus achieving the fastest 4G and 5G mobile internet in Hungary, based on the aggregate national average speed measurement results we have just seen – this time also in the standalone 5G version on some handsets. And we are not stopping there. Together with our network infrastructure partner CETIN Hungary, we plan to invest tens of billions of HUF in further development until 2028,” said György Koller, Chief Technical Officer of Yettel.

Yettel to celebrate 3rd birthday

The brand, which celebrates its third birthday in March, has in recent years launched its home and office internet service based primarily on its 5G mobile network, and was the first in Hungary to offer the so-called Standalone (SA) 5G service. The SA 5G solution, which leverages 5G capabilities more efficiently than ever before, is now available on select Honor smartphones, but the range of SA 5G-enabled handsets will be expanded to include smartphones from other vendors in the future.

Developments over the past three years include Home TV service, VoWiFi (Voice over WIFI) service to improve indoor voice coverage and Yepp, the first digital-only mobile tariff plan offering unlimited domestic data with no commitment. Due to the nature of mobile technology, mobile internet speeds are affected by network coverage, possible congestion, technology used (e.g. 4G, 5G, SA 5G), weather, physical obstacles (buildings, terrain) and handset capabilities.
