Encouraged by the success of the mobile phone case collection featuring The Bird of the Year created by Telenor, MME and Cellect Hungary this spring, now we are launching another awareness campaign to protect threatened birds. This time, the campaign focuses on Hungary’s protected barn swallows and house martins. These migratory birds leave their mud nests behind in the autumn and return to the same nest next spring. For this reason, it is important to maintain and protect their nests in the meantime.
“Hungary’s swallow population collapsed between 2000 and 2010. By the end of the first decade of the century, it declined by more than 60%. Unfortunately, this trend hasn’t turned around yet due to several reasons including the transformation of swallows’ habitat, the environmental changes caused by intensive agricultural production, pollution, climate change and the destruction of nests. To preserve the swallow population, we need to protect, maintain and possibly expand nesting places in cooperation with the general public”, said Zoltán Orbán, spokesperson of MME.
Luckily, people are getting increasingly environmentally conscious, and less and less nests are destroyed. However, some large-scale development projects fail to protect swallows’ habitat. As a result, besides protecting the nests, it is also essential to raise public awareness and sensitize people about this issue.
Create, enter the competition, protect swallows and your mobile phone
Based on a previous survey*, more than 95% of respondents protect their phones with some kind of a case. If offered a traditional and an environmentally-friendly alternative at the same price, 70% would select a green case.
In their awareness campaign, Telenor, Cellect and MME provide environmentally-friendly mobile phone cases featuring swallows to highlight the importance of protecting birds’ habitat. As a first step, the partners are announcing a competition for creating the graphic design to be featured on the cases. Graphic designs about barn swallows and house martins and protecting their habitat can be uploaded to the website https://www.telenor.hu/veddafecsket until 26 September 2021.
The submitted designs will be evaluated by graphic and product designer Panni Czikkely, creator of the mobile phone case featuring The Bird of the Year, Zoltán Orbán, spokesperson of MME, Bertold Fejes, Head of Sales and Marketing at Cellect Hungary and Attila Mészáros, Corporate Communications Director of Telenor Hungary.
The creators of the best three graphic designs will be rewarded with an iPhone 12, a Samsung Galaxy S21 or a Samsung Galaxy A52 of their choice. The winning design will be used to create a limited-edition plant-based, 100% biodegradable mobile phone case. The compostable cases will be available for Apple and Samsung handsets in Telenor’s webshop. Telenor will donate HUF 500 of the purchase price of each case to MME’s monitoring and habitat protection programs.
