9,000 mobile phones and 23,000 kg of batteries recycled due to collection effort by Hungarian students

183 schools join 6-week national Sustainability Week competition

The “COLLECTWITHME” used mobile phone, e-gadget and battery collection competition supported by the Ministry of Human Resources (EMMI), the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (ITM) and Telenor Hungary was joined by 183 schools.  Between mid-April and end of May, students collected more than 9,000 used mobile phones and e-gadgets, as well as nearly 23,000 kg of batteries for recycling. The best performing student collected more than 1,000 mobile phones and e-gadgets. The “most active school” title was awarded to a school in Békéscsaba.

The seasonal e-waste collection competition featured primary schools and individual participants. The initiative aims to engage more and more young people every year, raise environmental awareness and promote the recycling of mobile devices.

Mobile phones: students from Békéscsaba and Pécs finish on the top

The most active individual participant of this year’s competition was a student from Békéscsaba who collected more than 1,000 (1,018) mobile phones and e-gadgets. The runner-up was another student from Békéscsaba (with 686 devices) followed by a girl from Pécs (654).

The “most active school” title went to Erzsébethelyi Primary School of Békéscsaba where students collected 1,758 mobile phones and e-gadgets in total. Thanks to the support of the Innovation and Technology Ministry, they can visit a battery recycling site in the autumn. The runner-up was a school in Pécs (Deák Ferenc Secondary and Primary School), while the third place went to a school in Bicske (Bicskei Csokonai Vitéz Mihály Primary School) that collected more than 1,300 pieces of e-waste in total.

3 students, 4,000 kg of batteries

The top three performers of the individual competition (students from Veszprém, Békéscsaba and Mogyoród) collected more than 1,000 kg of batteries each summing up to more than 4,000 kg during the competition.

In the competition between schools, teams from Fejér, Veszprém and Békés counties fought neck and neck. The most batteries (1,480 kg) were collected by Bicskei Csokonai Vitéz Mihály Primary School followed by a school in Veszprém (Veszprémi Rózsa Úti Primary School) with 1,437 kg.  The third place went to a school in Békéscsaba (Erzsébethelyi Primary School) collecting 1,433 kg of batteries.
